How to unprotect an Excel sheet or workbook (.xls, .xlsx)

A locked worksheet, workbook structure and an opening password require different checks. If cells are visible but cannot be edited, begin with sheet protection.

Identify the problem

Worksheet protection controls editing of cells. Workbook structure protection affects operations on sheets. An opening-password prompt appears before you can read the workbook. Calling all three “Excel password removal” can lead you to the wrong solution.

For a worksheet password you know, use Review > Unprotect Sheet and enter it when asked. If you forgot it, check with the workbook author or look for an earlier authorized copy. Describe whether you can see cells, edit cells or change sheets when requesting help.

File formats: .xls, .xlsx
Excel desktop for your own .xls or .xlsx workbook; begin with a backup copy.

Practical steps

  1. Open the affected workbook and determine whether its cells are readable.
  2. For blocked cell edits, select that sheet and use Review > Unprotect Sheet with the sheet password.
  3. For blocked tab operations, check workbook structure protection and use its own password.
  4. Make only the authorized changes and save a separate working copy.

How to check the result

Test the cell or tab operation that was previously blocked. Check formulas, named ranges, formatting and external links; success is not just the absence of a prompt. Reapply protection where it is still needed.

Common mistakes and limits

Sheet and workbook passwords can differ. A read-only file, sharing permission or Protected View notice is not automatically sheet protection. Do not disable Protected View globally to solve one workbook.

Before requesting recovery

Keep the original file unchanged. Work on a copy, note the exact error and list any remembered words, dates or password length. Check your own saved passwords, the original email and an authorized backup before uploading.

When to stop and ask for help

If a required password is unknown, ask the workbook owner or inspect an earlier authorized version. Supply the exact blocked action and screenshot text when requesting help.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I edit some cells but not others?

A protected worksheet can deliberately leave selected cells editable. Ask which ranges you are meant to change before removing protection from the whole sheet.

When do I pay?

The recovery fee is USD $19.99 per file. We confirm success before requesting payment. Payment details appear on your request status page after recovery. We verify payment manually before releasing your password or result.
